الابتهار بالذنب أعظم من ركوبه

Falsely claiming a sin is greater than committing it.

وهو أن يقول فعلت، ولم يفعل؛ لأنه لم يدعه لنفسه إلا وهو لو قدر فعل، فهو كفاعله بالنية، وزاد عليه بقبحه وهتك ستره، وتبحبحه بذنب لم يفعله.

It is to say 'I did it' when one has not done it; because he only claimed it for himself when he would have done it if he could, so he is like the one who did it by intention, and he added to its ugliness by exposing his shame and wallowing in a sin he did not commit.

وفي حديث عمر رضي الله عنه: أنه رفع إليه غلام ابتهر جارية في شعره، فلم يوجد أنبت، فدرأ عنه الحد

And in the hadith of Umar, may Allah be pleased with him: a young man was brought to him who had falsely accused a slave girl in his poetry, but it was not found to be true, so the prescribed punishment was averted from him.

يقال: ابتهر في الدعاء إذا تحوب وجهد

It is said: He exerted himself in supplication if he was earnest and made an effort.

ابتهر في الدعاء، إذا كان يدعو كل ساعة، ولا يسكت عنه

باهر صاحبه فبهره: طاوله.

He surpassed his companion and overwhelmed him: he outdid him.

انبهر السيف: انكسر نصفين

The sword inbahara: it broke in half.

ابهأر النهار، وذالك حين ترتفع الشمس.

The day ibhaara: and that is when the sun rises high.

ابهأر الليل ابهيرارا، إذا انتصف

The night ibhaara ibhiaraara, if it reached its middle.

أنه صلى الله عليه وسلم سار حتى ابهار الليل

That the Prophet, peace be upon him, traveled until the middle of the night.

والباهرات: السفن، سميت بذالك لشقها الماء وغلبتها عليه.

And Al-Bahirat: are ships, named so for their splitting of the water and their dominance over it.

والباهر: عرق ينفذ شواة الرأس إلى اليافوخ من الدماغ

And Al-Bahir: is a vein that penetrates the scalp of the head to the fontanelle of the brain.

والبهور، كجرول: الأسد، لنقلبته.

And Al-Buhor, like jurwol: is the lion, for its dominance.

لبهرة من الليل، و من الوادي، و من الفرس، والرحل والحلقة: وسطه

The bahra of the night, and of the valley, and of the horse, and the saddle, and the ring: is its middle.

ويقال للمرأة إذا ثقل أرادفها فإذا مشت وقع عليها البهر والربو: بهير

And it is said of a woman if her hips are heavy and when she walks she becomes breathless and panting: bahir.

إذا ما تأيا تريد القيام تهادى كما قد رأيت البهيرا

When she hesitates wanting to stand, she sways as you have seen the heavy-hipped woman.

البهار: بالكسر: المفاخرة.

Al-bihar: with kasra: is boasting.

وابهار علينا الليل، أي طال.

And the night ibhaara upon us, meaning it became long.

وليـلة البهر: السابعة والثامنة والتاسعة، وهي الليالي التي يغلب فيها ضوء القمر النجوم

And Laylat al-Bahr: the seventh, eighth, and ninth, which are the nights in which the moonlight overcomes the stars.

ويقال لليالي البيض: بهر.

And the bright nights are called: Bahr.

والعرب تقول: الأزواج ثلاثة: زوج مهر، وزوج بهر وزوج دهر؛ فأما زوج مهر فرجل لا شرف له فهو يسني المهر ليرغب فيه، وأما زوج بهر، فالشريف وإن قل ماله تتزوجه المرأة لتفخر به، وزوج دهر كفؤها.

And the Arabs say: Marriages are three: a marriage of dowry, a marriage of pride, and a marriage of destiny; as for the marriage of dowry, it is a man with no honor, so he increases the dowry to be desired. As for the marriage of pride, it is the noble man, even if his wealth is little, a woman marries him to boast of him, and the marriage of destiny is her equal.

ويقال: رأيت فلانا بهرة، أي جهرة علانية

And it is said: I saw so-and-so bahra, meaning openly and publicly.

وكم من شجاع بادر الموت بهرة يموت على ظهر الفراش ويهرم

And how many a brave man rushes to death openly, only to die in his bed and grow old.
