Abu al-Hasan (Muhammad ibn Ahmad) ibn Ayyub ibn al-Salt (ibn Shanbadh), whom al-Jawhari and the author of al-Lisan omitted. Al-Saghani said he is (with fath on the shin and nun) and is known by this, while the common people favored the sukun on the nun, and in the original of al-Rashati, it is with shadda on the nun. He was from Baghdad, took the recitation (Qira'at) by عرض (عرضاً) from Qanbal and Ishaq al-Khaza'i, and Abdullah ibn al-Mutarriz recited the Qira'at to him by عرض. He was (one whose prayers were answered), and that is because he prayed against Ibn Muqlah that God would cut off his hand and scatter his assembly. His prayer was answered against him because he was the one who severely rebuked him and exiled him from Baghdad to Basra, or it was said to al-Madain, according to our shaykh. The phrasing of al-Maqrizi in his history implies that the one whose prayer God answered against Ibn Muqlah was al-Sharif Ismail ibn Tabataba al-Alawi. I say: there is no contradiction in combining them. In books of genealogy: He was unique in reciting irregular readings which he used to recite. In the mihrab, he was ordered to return, but he did not comply. Ibn Muqlah ordered him to be slapped, and he died in the year 323. Shanbadh is declined and undeclined, said Ibn al-Tilmisani. Al-Shihab said: It is a foreign proper noun, undeclinable. And Abu al-Hasan mentioned, narrated from Abu Muslim al-Kajji and Bishr ibn Musa, and from him Abu Bakr ibn Shadhan and Abu Hafs ibn Shahin. And in some copies of 'al-Shifa' by Iyad, it is found: Ahmad ibn Ahmad ibn Shanbadh, which is an error. The correct is Muhammad ibn Ahmad, as stated by the author. (And Ali ibn Shanbadh), he vocalized it like the first (and both of them are among the reciters). (And Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Shanbadh), like Ja'far: (Judge of Dinawar, a traditionist). Al-Siraj narrated from him in al-Luma'. Al-Hafiz said: And Abu al-Qasim Shanbadh ibn Umar ibn al-Husayn ibn Hammad al-Qattan, Taher al-Naysaburi heard from him and vocalized it. And remaining on him: Abu al-Faraj Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Ibrahim ibn Allam al-Shanbadhi, he recited to Ibn Shanbadh and was known by him. He is weak in narration from his teacher and others, despite his extensive knowledge. He died in the year 388. And among what is to be added: Shanabadh, with kasra: a village in Balkh, from which is Abu al-Qasim Abd al-Rahman ibn Muhammad ibn Hamid al-Balkhi al-Shanabadhi the ascetic, who narrated many hadith, accompanied Abu Bakr al-Waraq and others. He died in the year 355.
