And Abu Amr ibn al-Ala used to marvel at the saying of Abu Dawud: (like the one who has lost his way listened) to the voice of a seeker.

وغيره أراد بالناشد أيضا رجلا قد ضلت دابته فهو ينشدها أي يطلبها ليتعزى بذلك

And others meant by the seeker also a man whose mount had gone astray, so he seeks it, meaning he looks for it to be consoled by that.

وأما ليث (بن) المظفر فإنه جعل الناشد المعرف في هاذا البيت

As for Layth (ibn) al-Muzzaffar, he made the seeker the identifier in this verse.

And the author has used it generally, while most grammarians and linguists have restricted it to cases where there is an entreaty along with the oath.

Al-Layth said: Nashada yunshidu so-and-so so-and-so when he says, 'I ask you by God and by kinship'.

The nashdah is a masdar, and as for nashdak, it is said that the 'ta' was omitted from it and it stands in place of the verb.

قولهم عمرك الله وقعدك الله، بمنزلة نشدك الله

Their saying 'Omraka Allah' and 'Qa'adaka Allah' is like 'Nashdak Allah'.

The origin of recitation is raising the voice, and from it is the recitation of poetry.

And 'Nashadtu-ka Allah' and 'Nashadtu-ka' means 'I asked you by God,' and it was said: 'I reminded you of God'.

وأنشد بهم: هجاهم

وفي الخبر أن السليطيين قالوا لغسان: هذا جرير ينشد بنا، أي يهجونا

And in the report, the Sulaytiyyun said to Ghassan: This is Jarir reciting against us, meaning insulting us.

وقولهم نشدتك بالله بالرحم معناه: طلبت إليك بالله وبحق الرحم برفع نشيدي، أي صوتي

And their saying 'Nashadtu-ka billahi wa bir-rahim' means: I sought from you by God and by the right of kinship by raising my plea, meaning my voice.

إذا ما انجلت عنه غداة ضبابة غدا وهو في بلد خرانق منشد

When the mist cleared from him in the morning, he went forth, and he was in a desolate land, Munshid.

فمندفع الغلان من جنب منشد فنعف الغراب خطبه وأساوده

So the rush of the Ghulan from the side of Munshid, and the Raven's ravine, its events and its lions.

فسقى الله ما بين القفيل فطابة فما دون أرمام فما فوق منشد

May God water what is between al-Qifayl and Tabah, and what is below Armam, and what is above Munshid.

الناشدون: الذين ينشدون الإبل ويطلبون الشوال فيأخذونها ويحبسونها على أربابها

The nashidun: those who seek out camels and look for the lost ones, take them, and keep them for their owners.

نشدت فلانا أنشده نشدا فنشد، أي سألته بالله، كأنك ذكرته إياه فتذكر

I asked so-and-so to make him swear an oath, so he swore, meaning I asked him by God, as if you reminded him of it and he remembered.

فأنشد له رجال

So men responded to him.

يقال: نشدته فأنشدني وأنشد لي

It is said: I asked him, so he responded to me and answered for me.

وأقسط، إذا عدل، كأنه أزال جوره

And he acted justly, if he was just, as if he removed his injustice.

وفي الخبر أن أم قيس بن ذريح أبغضت لبني فناشدته في طلاقها

And in the report, the mother of Qays ibn Dhurayh hated Bani, so she implored him regarding her divorce.

وقد يجوز أن يكون عدي بفي، لأن في ناشدت معنى طلبت ورغبت وتكلمت

And it may be permissible to use 'bi' (in), because 'nashadtu' has the meaning of seeking, desiring, and speaking.

ومسوف نشد الصبوح صبحته قبل الصباح وقبل كل نداء

And the hungry one sought the morning meal, I came upon him before the morning and before every call.

والمسوف: الجائع ينظر يمنة ويسرة

And the musawwif: the hungry one who looks right and left.

أنشد الناس ولا أنشدهم إنما ينشد من كان أضل لا أنشدهم، أي لا أدل عليهم، وينشد: يطلب

I seek out people and do not seek them out; only one who has gone astray seeks them out, not I seek them out, meaning I do not guide them, and yanshudu: he seeks.
