And the noun is afhus and af'ud, on the pattern af'ul, and the plural is afahis and afa'id.
وهو أي الأفؤود (أيضا: موضعه الذي يفأد فيه.
And it, meaning al-Af'ud, is also: its place where it is baked.

It is said for the first: baked bread, roasted meat, and for the second, a fearful man: a coward with a weak heart, like one who is hollowed out, and a fearful and cowardly man: one who has no heart.
وافتأدوا: أوقدوا نارا ليشتووا.
And they kindled a fire to roast.
والتفؤد: التحرق
And al-Taf'ud: the burning.
والتوقد، ومنه أي من معنى التوقد، سمي (الفؤاد)، بالضم، مهموزا، لتوقده
And al-Tawaqqud, and from it, meaning from the sense of burning, the fu'ad is named, with damma and hamza, for its burning.
وقيل أصل الفأد، الحركة والتحريك، ومنه اشتق الفؤاد، لأنه ينبض ويتحرك كثيرا
And it is said the origin of al-Fa'd is movement and agitation, and from it fu'ad is derived, because it pulses and moves a lot.
وقيل إنما يقال للقلب: الفؤاد، إذا اعتبر فيه معنى! التفؤد، أي التوقد
And it is said the heart is called fu'ad only when the meaning of al-taf'ud, i.e., al-tawaqqud, is considered in it.
كمثل أتان الوحش أما فؤادها فصعب وأما ظهرها فركوب
Like a wild she-donkey, as for her heart it is difficult, and as for her back, it is for riding.
أو هو، أي الفؤاد: ما يتعلق بالمريء من كبد ورئة وقلب
Or it, meaning al-Fu'ad: what is attached to the esophagus from the liver, lungs, and heart.
القلب مضغة في الفؤاد، معلقة بالنياط.
The heart is a lump in the fu'ad, attached to the aorta.
وقيل: الفؤاد: وعاء القلب، أو داخله، أو غشاؤه، والقلب حبته.
And it is said: Al-Fu'ad is the container of the heart, or its inside, or its membrane, and the heart is its kernel.
أتاكم أهل اليمن هم أرق قلوبا، وألين أفئدة
The people of Yemen have come to you; they are the most tender of hearts and the softest of 'af'idah (hearts/minds).
ما كذب الفؤاد ما رأى
The heart did not deny what it saw.
ولا نعلمه كسر على غير ذالك.
And we do not know of its breaking in any other way.
وقد قرىء به. وهو قراءة الجرح العقيلي.
And it has been recited with it. And it is the recitation of Al-Jurh Al-Uqayli.
وهي لغة فيه، ولا عبرة بإنكار أبي حاتم لها.
And it is a dialect for it, and Abu Hatim's denial of it is of no consequence.
وفأدا: (شكاه أي شكا فؤاده، أو وجع فؤاده فهو مفؤود.
And fa'adan: (he complained of it, meaning he complained of his heart, or his heart ached, so he is afflicted.
وفي الحديث أنه (عاد سعدا وقال: إنك رجل مفؤود)
And in the hadith it is mentioned that he visited Sa'd and said: You are a man afflicted (in the heart).
وهو الذي أصيب فؤاده بوجع، ومثله في (التوضيح) لابن مالك.
And he is the one whose heart was struck with pain, and similarly in (Al-Tawdih) by Ibn Malik.
ورجل مفؤود: مصاب الفؤاد، وقد فئد! وفأده الفزع.
And a fearful man: one struck in the heart, and he has complained of pain! And fear struck him.
فأد فلان لفلان إذا عمل في أمره بالغيب جميلا.
So-and-so acted kindly for so-and-so when he did a good deed in his matter secretly.
