وقيل: إنه واد ينصب إلى نهر بين آمد وميافارقين، ثم يصب في دجلة.
And it is said: it is a valley that flows into a river between Amid and Mayyāfāriqīn, then it flows into the Tigris.
قال شيخنا: وكلامهم صريح في أنه أعجمي اللفظ والمكان، فلا تعرف مادته ولا وزنه.
Our Sheikh said: And their words are explicit that it is foreign in pronunciation and place, so its root and meter are unknown.
والشعراء يتلاعبون بالكلام، على مقتضى قرائحهم وعرفاتهم، ويحذفون بحسب ما يعرض لهم من الضرائر، كما عرف ذالك في محله، فلا يكون في كلامهم شاهد على إثبات شيء من الكلمات العجمية.
And poets play with words, according to the dictates of their intellects and customs, and they omit according to what necessities present themselves, as is known in its place, so their speech is not evidence for establishing any of the foreign words.
وقوله: ينبغي أن يذكر هنا إلى آخره، بناء على أن وزنه فاعيل ما، وأن مادته: ستد.
And his saying: it should be mentioned here until the end, based on the assumption that its meter is Fāʿīl mā, and its root is: S-T-D.
وليس الأمر، كذالك بل هاذه المادة مه ملة في كلامهم، وهاذا اللفظة عجمية لا أصل لها، وذكرها إن احتاج إليهاالأمر، لوقوعها في كلام العرب، ينبغي أن يكون في الميم، أو في باب المعتل، لأن وزنها غير معلوم لنا، كأصلها، على ما هو المقرر المصرح به في كلام ابن السراج وغيره من أئمة الاشتقاق، وعلماء التصريف.
And the matter is not so, rather this root is neglected in their speech, and this word is foreign and has no origin. And mentioning it, if the matter requires it, due to its occurrence in the speech of the Arabs, should be in the section of 'mim', or in the section of defective verbs, because its meter is unknown to us, like its origin, as is established and explicitly stated in the words of Ibn al-Sarrāj and others from the imams of derivation and scholars of morphology.
