وقيل الزاي في ذالك كله بدل من السين

And it is said the 'zay' in all of that is a substitute for the 'sin'.

الأول يدر الحيض ويخرج الجنين، وإذا طلي به البدن مع الدهن قتل القمل

The first induces menstruation and expels the fetus, and if it is applied to the body with oil, it kills lice.

والثاني ينفع القروح الخبيثة، وينبت اللحم، ويقوي السمع، وينفع من الصرع والوسواس، وتفصيله في المنهاج والتذكرة

قد تبين فيه الدرد، فأطعمه ما يزدرد

The pain has become clear in him, so feed him what is easily swallowed.

And a medicine difficult to swallow.

أخذ بمزرده: ضيق عليه، كأخذ بمخنقه

He took him by his mazrad: he constricted him, like taking him by his choker.

وزرد عينه على صاحبه: غضب عليه وتجهمه

And zarada his eye at his companion: he became angry with him and frowned.

ومعناه ضيقها عليه لا يفتحها حتى يملأها منه

And its meaning is to narrow it for him, not opening it until he fills it with him.

وظن فلان أني زردة له، أي أكلة

And so-and-so thought that I was a zardah for him, meaning something to be eaten.

وتقول للحالف: تزردها حصاء، وتزبدها حذاء

And you say to the one who swears: 'tazarradaha hasaa', and 'tazabbadaha hidhaa'.
