And the jurists and linguists erred in their saying: Civet is an animal from which perfume is milked.

وإنما الدابة: السنور أي البري، وهو كالأهلي، لاكنه أطول منه وأكبر جثة، وو^{\prime}بره أميل إلى السواد

Rather, the animal is the civet cat, meaning the wild one, which is like the domestic one, but it is longer and larger in body, and its fur is more inclined to blackness.

And among the civet cats, there is one called Al-Zabada.

الزباد: الطيب وهو رشح شبيه بالوسخ الأسود اللزج يجتمع تحت ذنبها على المخرج

Al-Zabad: the perfume, which is a secretion resembling sticky black dirt that collects under its tail near the vent.

فتمسك الدابة وتمنع الاضطراب ويسلب ذالك الوسخ المجتمع هناك بليطة أو ملعقة أو خرقة أو درهم رقيق

So the animal is held and prevented from struggling, and that collected dirt is scraped out with a spatula, or a spoon, or a cloth, or a thin piece of metal.

وإذا تفقدت أرفاغه ومغابنه وخواصره وجد فيها رطوبة تحك منها فتكون لها رائحة المسك الذكي

And if you inspect its groins, folds, and flanks, you will find moisture in them that can be scraped off, giving it the scent of pure musk.

الزباد مثل السنور الصغير، يجلب من نواجي الهند، وقد يأنس فيقتنى ويحتلب شيئا شبيها بالزبد يظهر على حلمته بالعصر

Al-Zabad is like a small civet cat, brought from the regions of India, and it may become tame and kept, and something resembling froth appears on its nipple when squeezed.
