إنما سميت بذالك لأنها تبيد من يحلها

It was only named that because it destroys whoever inhabits it.

البيداء: المكان المستوي المشرف، قليلة الشجر جرداء تقود اليوم ونصف يوم، وأقل

The desert: the level, elevated place, with few trees, barren, leading for a day and a half, and less.

كسروه تكسير الصفات لأنه في الأصل صفة

And the standard (plural) is baydawāt because it is a plural of nouns.

Indeed, a people will invade the Kaaba, and when they descend upon the Bayda', Allah will send Gabriel, who will say: 'O Bayda', destroy them.'

And it is here the name of a specific place, and it is a smooth land between the two noble sanctuaries.

At the edge of the Madinah Miqat which is called Dhu al-Hulayfah.

والبيدانة: الأتان، اسم لها

And al-Baydanah: the female donkey, its name.

And al-Baydanah: the wild ass, or it is she who inhabits the desert: she has no (specific) name.

وفي تسمية الأتان البيدانة قولان: أحدهما أنها سميت بذالك لسكونها البيداء، وتكون النون فيها زائدة

And regarding the naming of the female donkey al-Baydanah, there are two opinions: the first is that it was named that due to its dwelling in the desert, and the 'nun' is extra.

والقول الثاني: أنها العظيمة البدن. وتكون النون فيها أصلية

And the second opinion: that it is large of body. And the 'nun' is original.

وبيد، وبايد بمعنى غير

And 'bayd' and 'bayid' mean 'other than'.

يقال: رجل كثير المال بيد أنه بخيل، معناه غير أنه بخيل

It is said: a man of much wealth, except that he is stingy, meaning 'other than that he is stingy'.

وقيل: هي بمعنى على

And it was said: it means 'upon'.

أي التي يراد منها المصاحبة

Meaning that accompaniment is intended by it.

والأول أعلى

And the first (opinion) is more valid.

وقد جاء في بعض الروايات: (بايد أنهم أوتوا الكتاب من قبلنا)

And it has come in some narrations: 'Except that they were given the Book before us.'

ولم أره في اللغة بهاذا المعنى

And I have not seen it in the language with this meaning.

وقال بعضهم: إنها بأيد، أي بقوة

And some of them said: it is 'bi-ayd', meaning 'by strength'.

وفيه لغة أخرى ميد بالميم

And there is another pronunciation, 'mayd' with the 'mim'.

ويأتي بيد بمعنى من أجل

And 'bayd' comes with the meaning of 'for the sake of'.

ومثله بحديث: (أنا أفصح العرب بيد أني من قريش)

And similarly in the Hadith: 'I am the most eloquent of the Arabs, but I am from Quraysh.'

وطعام بيد: رديء، نقله الصغاني

And bad food: poor, as transmitted by al-Saghani.

وبيدان: اسم رجل

And Baydan: the name of a man.

متى أنفلت من دين بيدان لا يعد لبيدان دين في كرائم ماليا

When shall I escape from the debt of Baydan? No debt of Baydan is counted against my precious wealth.

على أنني قد قلت من ثقة به ألا إنما باعت يميني شماليا

Although I have said with confidence in him that my right hand has only sold my left.

وبيدان: (ع)، قال: أجدك لن ترى بثعيلبات ولا بيدان ناجية ذمولا

And Baydan: (a place name), he said: I find you will not see among the Th'aylibāt nor among the Baydān, a surviving, flowing (water).

أو بيدان (ماءة لبني جعفر بن كلاب)

Or Baydan (a water source for Banu Ja'far ibn Kilab).

وقيل: جبل أحمر مستطيل من أخبلة حمى ضرية

And it was said: a long red mountain from the plains of Hima Dhirriyah.
