It is said: 'imtaaha al-ma'' is literally drawing water from the well, and 'imtaahahu' is asking for a gift, metaphorically.

امتاحت الشمس ذفرى البعير: استدرت عرقه.

أي امتحن، أي حملن من الريف. هاذا تفسيره.

عنى به اللسان لأنه يميح من قلبه.

وأشطان الدلاء، أي أسباب الكلام كمثي لديه، غير متعذر عليه.

وإنما يصف خصوما خاصمهم فغلبهم أو قاومهم، فهو مجاز.
