It is narrated that Umar, may God be pleased with him, flogged two men who prayed after Asr, meaning they performed prayer.
قال الأعشى: وسبح على حين العشيات والضحى ولا تعبد الشيطان والله فاعبدا
Al-A'sha said: And pray during the late afternoons and forenoon, and do not worship Satan; but Allah, worship Him.
عليه فسر قوله تعالى: {فسبحان الله حين تمسون وحين تصبحون}
Based on this, His saying is interpreted: {So glorify Allah when you reach the evening and when you reach the morning}.
وحين تظهرون: الأولى.
And when you appear [in the afternoon]: the noon prayer.
وقوله: {وسبح بالعشي والإبكار}
And His saying: {And glorify Him in the evening and the morning}.
فلولا اءنه كان من المسبحين
But if he had not been among those who glorify (God).
إن لك في النهار سبحا طويلا
Indeed, for you by day is a long period of leisure.
من قرأ سبخا فمعناه قريب من السبح.
Whoever reads 'sabkhan' (with kha), its meaning is close to 'sabahan' (with ha).
السبح: الاضطراب و التصرف في المعاش
Al-sabah: Agitation and managing one's livelihood.
السبع: الحفر.
Al-sab': Digging.
سبح اليربوع في الأرض، إذا حفر فيها.
The jerboa dug in the ground, if it burrowed in it.
وقد يكون السبح بالليل.
And al-sabah may also be at night.
والسبح أيضا: النوم نفسه.
And al-sabah is also: sleep itself.
والسبح أيضا: السكون.
And al-sabah is also: stillness.
والسبح: التقلب والانتشار في الأرض والتصرف في المعاش، فكأنه ضد.
And al-sabah: is the turning and spreading in the land and managing one's livelihood, so it is like an opposite.
سبحت في الأرض، وسبخت فيها، إذا تباعدت فيها.
I traveled far in the land, and I moved freely in it, if you moved far in it.
والسبح: الإكثار من الكلام.
And al-sabah: is the abundance of speech.
كساء مخسبح، كمعظم: قوي شديد
A strong, sturdy garment, like 'mu'azzam'.
كساء مسبح: أي معرض
A m-s-b-ḥ garment: meaning exposed.
السباح: بعير، على التشبيه.
Al-sabbāḥ: A camel, by way of simile.
السبوح: فرس ربيعة بن جشم، على التشبيه.
Al-sabūḥ: The mare of Rabi'ah ibn Jusham, by way of simile.
وسبوحة بفتح السين مخففة: مكة المشرفة، زيدت شرفا، أو واد بعرفات
And Sabūḥah (with fatha on the sin, light): the noble Mecca, may its honor be increased, or a valley in Arafat.
