Meaning he remains, fearing that he might speak and err and slip, as if walking on the side of a mountain, which is its flank and edge, fearing he might slip and fall.

And ar-rakḥ also; the courtyard of the house and its open space.

There is no preemption in a courtyard, nor a path, nor an open space.
قال أبو عبيد الركح، بالضم: ناحية البيت من ورائه كأنه فضاء.
Abu Ubayd said: ar-rakḥ, with damma: the side of the house behind it, as if it were an open space.
أما ترى ما غشي الأركاحا لم يدع الثلج لهم وجاحا
Do you not see what has covered the open spaces, the snow has left them no shelter?
والأركاح: الأساس.
