A boastful man: he boasts about what he does not have, and it is not of high quality, (like the boastful one).

إن هاذا البجباج النفاج لا يدري ما الله.

Indeed, this boaster, the arrogant one, does not know God.

النفاج: الذي يتمدح بما ليس فيه، من الانتفاج: الارتفاع.

The arrogant one: he who praises himself for what he does not have, from 'al-intifaj': elevation.

رجل نفاج: ذو نفج، يقول ما لا يفعل ويفخر بما ليس له ولا فيه.

A boastful man: possessing boastfulness, he says what he does not do and boasts about what he does not have and does not possess.

النفيج كسكيت: الأجنبي الذي (يدخل بين القوم) ويسمل بينهم (ويصلح) أمرهم؛ كذا عن الأعرابي، (أو الذي يعترض) بين القوم (لا يصلح ولا يفسد) ، قاله أبو العباس، (ج نفج بضمتين).

The Nafiij (like 'sikkeet'): the stranger who (enters among the people) and mends their affairs among them (and fixes) their affairs; thus from the Bedouin, (or one who intervenes) between the people (neither fixing nor spoiling) their affairs, Abu Al-Abbas said this, (plural: 'nafaj' with two dammah).

والنافجة: السحابة الكثيرة المطر ، وهو مجاز، سميت بالريح التي تأتي بشدة، كما يسمى الشيء باسم غيره لكونه منه بسبب.

And the Naafijah: the cloud with abundant rain, and it is a metaphor, named after the wind that comes with intensity, just as a thing is named by another name because it is related to it by cause.

راحت له في جنوح لليل نافجة لا الضب ممتنع منها ولا الورل

A rain cloud came for it in the late night, from which neither the lizard nor the monitor lizard could escape.

والنافجة: مؤخر الضلوع ، كالنافج، جمعه النوافج.

And the Naafijah: the rear part of the ribs, like the Naafij, its plural is Al-Nawaafij.

وكانت العرب تقول في الجاهلية للرجل إذا ولدت له بنت: هنيئا لك النافجة، أي (البنت) ، وإنما سميت بذالك (لأنها تعظم مال أبيها) ، وذالك أنه يزوجها فيأخذ (بمهرها) من الإبل فيضمها إلى إبله فينفجها، أي يرفعها؛ ومنهم من جعله من المجاز.

And the Arabs used to say in the Jahiliyyah to a man when a daughter was born to him: Congratulations on the Naafijah, meaning (the daughter), and she was named that (because she increases her father's wealth), and that is because he marries her off and takes (her dowry) of camels and adds them to his camels, thus increasing them, meaning raising them; and some of them considered it metaphorical.

والنافجة: وعاء المسك ، مجاز.

And the Naafijah: the container of musk, a metaphor.

وقيل: أول كل ريح تبدأ بشدة.

And it was said: the beginning of every wind that starts with intensity.

قال أبو حنيفة: ربما انتفجت الشمال على الناس بعدما ينامون فتكاد تهلكهم بالقر من آخر ليلتهم، وقد كان أول ليلتهم دفيئا.

Abu Hanifa said: Perhaps the north wind would suddenly emerge upon the people after they slept, almost destroying them with cold in the late night, even though the early part of their night was warm.

وقال شمر: النافجة من الرياح: التي لا تشعر حتى تنتفج عليك، وانتفاجها: خروجها عاصفة عليك وأنت غافهل.

And Shamir said: The Naafijah of the winds: is that which you do not feel until it suddenly emerges upon you, and its sudden emergence is its coming out as a storm upon you while you are unaware.

والنفيجة، كسفينة: القوس وهي شطيبة من نبع.

And the Nufaijah, (like 'safeenah'): the bow, and it is a strip of willow wood.

من المجاز: النفاجة، بالكسر: رقعة مربعة تحت الكم من الثوب.

Metaphorically: Al-Nafaajah, (with kasrah): a square patch under the sleeve of a garment.

من المجاز: النفاجة والنفجة كرمانة وصبرة: رقعة الدخريص بالكسر يتوسع بها.

Metaphorically: Al-Nafaajah and Al-Nafjah (like 'rummanah' and 'sabra): a patch for the 'dakhrees' (with kasrah) used to widen it.

والنفج، بضمتين: الثقلاء من الناس.

And Al-Nafaj, (with two dammah): the heavy people.

والتنافيج: الدخاريص، سميت لأنها تنفج الثوب فتوسعه.

And Al-Tanaafij: the 'dakhrees', named so because they expand the garment and widen it.

Shall I separate it (from the udder) or keep it close (to the udder)?

الإنفاج: إبانة الإناء عن الضرع عند الحلب حتى تعلوه الرغوة.

Al-Infaaj: separating the vessel from the udder during milking until foam covers it.

والأنفجاني ، بفتح الفاء، كأنبجاني : هو المفرط فيما يقول ، والمفتخر بما ليس له.

And Al-Anfajaani, (with fatha on the faa), (like 'anbajani'): is the one who exaggerates in what he says, and boasts about what he does not have.

والمنافج: العظامات.

And Al-Manaafij: the large bones.

وامرة نفج الحقيبة ، بضمتين، إذا كانت ضخمة الأرداف والمآكم.

And a woman with large hips, (with two dammah), if she had large buttocks and hips.

Large-hipped, smooth-skinned, unclothed.

وفي حديث علي: نافجا حضنيه كنى به عن التعاظم والخيلاء.

And in Ali's hadith: showing his sides, a kenning for arrogance and pride.

وصوت نافج: غليظ جاف.

And a rough sound: coarse and dry.

تسمع للأعبد زجرا نافجا من قولهم أيا هجا أيا هجا

You hear the slave being urged roughly, from their saying 'Aya Haja, Aya Haja'.

وقيل: أراد بالزجر النافج الذي ينفج الإبل حتى تتوسع في مراتعها ولا تجتمع.

And it was said: he meant by the rough urging that which makes the camels spread out until they widen in their pastures and do not gather.

وتنفج الرجل وانتفج: إذا افتخر بأكثر مما عنده ، أو بما ليس له ولا فيه.

And the man became boastful and swelled up: if he boasted about more than he had, or about what he did not have and did not possess.

أنفجه الصائد واستنفجه، الأخيرة عن ابن الأعرابي، أي استخرجه، من ذالك، يقال: ما الذي استنفج غضبك ، أي أظهره وأخرجه.
