وَفِي حَدِيثِ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ: (لَأَنْ يُمْحَشِي مَعِي ضِغْثَانِ مِنْ نَارٍ أَحَبُّ إِلَيَّ مِنْ أَنْ يَسْعَى غُلَامِي خَلْفِي).
And in the narration of Abu Hurayrah: (That two bundles of fire be gathered with me is dearer to me than my servant running behind me).
وَأَنْشَدَ الْأَصْمَعِيُّ: إِنْ يُخْلِهِ بَعَرَقَةٍ أَوْ يَجْتَثِثْ لَا يَخِلُّ حَتَّى اللَّيْلِ ضِغْثَ الْمُضْطَغِثِ يُخِلُّهُ، أَيْ يَقْطَعُهُ.
And Al-Asma'i recited: If he leaves it with a dung-heap or uproots it, he will not leave it until night, the bundle of the one who gathers it, he leaves it, meaning he cuts it.
فَقَالَ: اللَّهُمَّ إِنْ كَتَبْتَ عَلَيَّ إِثْمًا أَوْ ضِغْثًا فَامْحُهُ عَنِّي فَإِنَّكَ تَمْحُو مَا تَشَاءُ.
And he said: O Allah, if You have written upon me a sin or a confused matter, then erase it from me, for You erase what You will.
وَكَلَامٌ ضِغْثٌ (وَضَغْثٌ) لَا خَيْرَ فِيهِ، وَالْجَمْعُ أَضْغَاثٌ.
And speech that is confused (and mixed) has no good in it, and the plural is aḍghāth.
أَضْغَاثُ أَحْلَامٍ وَمَا نَحْنُ بِتَأْوِيلِ الْأَحْلَامِ بِعَالِمِينَ (سُورَةُ يُوسُفَ، الْآيَةُ: 44).

وَقَالَ غَيْرُهُ: سُمِّيَتْ أَضْغَاثَ أَحْلَامٍ؛ لِأَنَّهَا مُخْتَلِطَةٌ، فَدَخَلَ بَعْضُهَا فِي بَعْضٍ، وَلَمْ تَتَمَيَّزْ مَخَارِجُهَا، وَلَمْ يَسْتَقِمْ تَأْوِيلُهَا.
And others said: They are called aḍghāth of dreams because they are mixed, so some of them entered into others, and their origins were not distinguished, and their interpretation was not sound.
وَقَالَ شَمِرٌ: الضِّغْثُ مِنَ الْخَبَرِ وَالْأَمْرِ مَا كَانَ مُخْتَلِطًا لَا حَقِيقَةَ لَهُ، قَالَ ابْنُ الْأَثِيرِ (أَرَادَ) عَمَلًا مُخْتَلِطًا غَيْرَ خَالِصٍ، مِنْ: ضَغَثَ الْحَدِيثَ، إِذَا خَلَطَهُ، فَهُوَ فِعْلٌ بِمَعْنَى مَفْعُولٍ.
And Shamir said: The ḍaghth of news and matters is that which is mixed and has no reality. Ibn al-Athir said: (He intended) a mixed and impure deed, from 'he mixed the speech', if he mixed it, so it is an active participle in the sense of a passive participle.
وَفِي حَدِيثِ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا (كَانَتْ تَضْغَثُ رَأْسَهَا).
And in the narration of Aisha, may God be pleased with her: (She used to treat her head (hair)).
