الافتيات: افتعال من الفوت، وهو السبق إلى الشيء دون ائتمار من يؤتمر
Al-iftiyāt: is an 'ifti'āl' form from al-fawt, which is to precede to something without consultation from whom consultation is sought.
مر النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم تحت جدار مائل، فأسرع المشي، فقال: إني أكره موت الفوات
The Prophet, peace be upon him, passed by a leaning wall, and he quickened his pace, so he said: I dislike sudden death.
يعني: موت الفجأة
Meaning: sudden death.
وهو من قولك: فاتني فلان بكذا: سبقني به
And it is from your saying: So-and-so surpassed me in such-and-such.
يقال للموت الفجأة: الموت الأبيض، والجارف، واللافت، والفاتل، وهو الموت، الفوات
Sudden death is called: the white death, the engulfing, the sweeping, the fatal, and it is al-mawt, al-fawāt.
هو مني فوت الرمح، أي حيث لا يبلغه
It is from me the distance of a spear, meaning where it cannot reach it.
جعل الله رزقك فوت فمك، أي تنظر إليه قدر ما يفوت فمك، ولا تقدر عليه
May God make your sustenance out of reach of your mouth, meaning you see it to the extent that it is beyond your mouth, and you cannot attain it.
وهو مني فوت اليد والظفر، أي قدر ما تفوت يدي
And it is from me the distance of the hand and the fingernail, meaning the extent that my hand can reach.
والفوت: الخلل، والفرجة بين الإصبعين، والجمع أفوات
And al-fawt: is the defect, and the gap between the fingers, and the plural is afwāt.
فلان لا يفتات عليه، أي لا يعمل شيء دون أمره
So-and-so is not acted upon without his order, meaning nothing is done without his command.
أمثلي يفتات عليه في أمر بناته؟
Would someone like me be acted upon regarding my daughters without my order?
أي يفعل في شأنهن شيء بغير أمره؟
Meaning, would something be done concerning them without his command?
قد افتات عليك فيه
Someone has acted independently concerning you in it.
افتات بأمره، أي مضى عليه ولم يستشر أحدا
He acted independently with his affair, meaning he proceeded with it without consulting anyone.
افتأت فلان بأمره بالهمزة إذا استبد به
So-and-so acted independently with his affair with hamza if he acted alone in it.
افتات الكلام: ابتدعه وارتجله، كافتلته

For indeed, it is an arrow from your quiver.
وهو من الفوت: السبق، تقول: تفوت فلان على فلان في كذا، وافتات عليه، إذا انفرد برأيه دونه في التصرف فيه
And it is from al-fawt: precedence. You say: So-and-so preceded so-and-so in such-and-such, and acted independently against him, if he acted alone in his opinion without him in managing it.
افتات برأيه: استبد به
To act independently with one's opinion: to act alone with it.
وفاته في كذا: سبقه
And it missed him in such-and-such: it surpassed him.
لو شهدتنا لأخبرناك وحدثناك بما كان، فقال له: لم تفاتي، فهاتي
If you had witnessed us, we would have informed you and told you what happened, so he said to him: You did not act independently, so bring it.
