وهو فرس المثلم بن عمر والتنوخي، وفيه يقول: حتى أرى فارس الصموت على أكساء خيل كأنها الإبل
And he is the horse of Al-Muthallam bin Omar al-Tannukhi, and about him he says: Until I see the rider of al-Samuut on a herd of horses like camels.
وضربة صموت): إذا كانت (تمر في العظام، لا تنبو عن عظم)
And a samuut strike): if it (penetrates the bones, does not miss a bone).
ويذهب نخوة المختال عني رقيق الحد ضربته صموت
And it removes the arrogance of the vain from me, the fine edge of its strike is penetrating.
وتركته ببلدة إصمت، كإربل
And I left him in the land of Ismit, like Irbil.
تركته بوحش إصمت وإصمتة، بكسرهن
I left him in the wilderness of Ismit and Ismitah, with kasrah on all of them.
وقطع بعضهم الألف من إصمت، ونصب التاء، فقال: بوحش الإصمتين له ذباب
And some of them cut the alif from Ismit, and منصوب the taa', and said: In the wilderness of al-Ismatayn, it has flies.
بوحش إصمت في أصلابها أود
In the wilderness of Ismit, in its loins are valleys.
المصمت): الشيء (الذي لا جوف له.
Al-Musmat): the thing (that has no hollow inside.
باب مصمت، وقفل مصمت): أي (مبهم)
A musmat door, and a musmat lock): meaning (obscure).
ومن دون ليلى مصمتات المقاصر
And beyond Layla are the impenetrable palaces.
ألف مصمت)، كما تقول: ألف كامل، وألف أقرع، بمعنى واحد.
Alif musmat), as you say: complete thousand, and alif aqra', meaning one.
وثوب مصمت) إذا كان (لا يخالط لونه لون).

إنما نهى رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم عن الثوب المصمت من خز
The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, only prohibited the musmat garment of khazz.

والإصمات أنه لا يكاد يبنى منها كلمة رباعية، أو خماسية، معراة من حروف الذلاقة، فكأنه قد صمت عنها.
And al-Ismaat is that it is hardly possible to build a four-letter or five-letter word from them, devoid of the fluent letters, as if they have been silenced from them.
ما أصمت) ، أي: أسكت (به الصبي من طعام ونحوه)
Ma asmat), meaning: what silences (the child with food and the like).
وما له صمتة لعياله، أي: ما يطعمهم، فيصمتهم به.

A jariya samuut al-khalkhalayn): if she is (thick-legged, so that her anklets are not heard) meaning her anklets (hiss), meaning sound, due to its obscurity in her legs.
وأصمتت الأرض): إذا (أحالت آخر حولين).
And the earth became silent): if (it became barren after two years).
لم يصمته ذالك: أي لم يكفه، وأصله في النفي، وإنما يقال ذالك فيما يؤكل أو يشرب.
That did not silence him: meaning it did not suffice him, and its origin is in negation, and it is only said for what is eaten or drunk.
فهو مصمت.
So he is musmat.
فلما ثقل رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم هبطنا وهبط الناس، يعني إلى المدينة، فدخلت إلى رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يوم أصمت فلا يتكلم، فجعل يرفع يده إلى السماء، ثم يصبها علي، أعرف أنه يدعو لي
And when the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, became heavy, we descended and the people descended, meaning to Medina, so I entered to the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, on the day he was silent and did not speak, so he began to raise his hand to the sky, then pour it on me, I knew he was praying for me.
يوم أصمت فلا يتكلم
The day he was silent and did not speak.
أصمت العليل، فهو مصمت، إذا اعتقل لسانه.
The sick person became silent, so he is musmat, if his tongue is tied.
أصمتت أمامة بنت أبي العاص
Umamah bint Abi al-Aas became silent.
إنك لا تشكو إلى مصمت
You do not complain to a musmat.
فاصبر على الحمل الثقيل أو مت
So be patient with the heavy burden or die.
بات فلان على صمات أمره: إذا كان معتزما عليه.
So-and-so spent the night on the determination of his affair: if he was resolved upon it.
وهو بصماته: إذا أشرف على قصده.

And he spent the night among the people at a visible and audible distance.
فرس مصمت، وخيل مصمتات: إذا لم يكن فيها شية.
A musmat horse, and musmat horses: if there is no marking on them.
وأدهم مصمت: لا يخالطه لون غير الدهمة.
And a musmat black horse: no color mixes with the blackness.
حلي مصمت: معناه: قد نشب على لابسه فما يتحرك، ولا يتزعزع، مثل الدملج والحجل وما أشبههما.
Musmat jewelry: meaning: it has become stuck to its wearer so it does not move, nor shake, like a bracelet and anklet and what resembles them.
البيت المصمت، وهو الذي ليس بمقفى ولا مصرع، بأن لا يتحد عروضه وضربه في الزنة، أي: في حرف الروي ولواحقه، كما حققه العروضيون.
The musmat verse, which is not rhymed nor metered, in that its meter and its ضرب (a metrical term) do not match in weight, meaning: in the rhyme letter and its additions, as confirmed by the prosodists.
