النقبة هي أول جرب يبدأ
The nuqbah is the first scab that begins.
يقال للبعير: به نقبة، وجمعها نقب، بسكون القاف، لاءنها تنقب الجلد نقبا، أي: تخرقه
It is said of a camel: it has a nuqbah, and its plural is nuqub, with a sukun on the qaf, because they penetrate the skin with a naqb, meaning: they pierce it.
يضع الهناء مواضع النقب
He applies the remedy to the places of the scab.
إذا كان ماهرا مصيبا
If he is skilled and accurate.
النقبة: أول ما يبدو منه أي: من الجرب
The nuqbah: the first thing that appears from it, meaning: from the scab.
ترى الرقعة مثل الكف بجنب البعير، أو وركه، أو بمشفره، ثم تتمشى فيه حتى تشربه كله
You see a patch like a hand on the side of the camel, or its hip, or its lip, then it spreads through it until it covers it all.
أن يجمع الفرس قوائمه في حضره ولا يبسط يديه ويكون حضره وثبا

My night in Iraq was long, and it was not long over the passes of Hijaz.
إنهم فزعوا من الطاعون، فقال: أرجو أن لا يطلع إلينا من نقابها
They were frightened by the plague, and he said: I hope it does not come to us from its passes.
هي جمع نقب، وهو الطريق بين الجبلين. أراد أنه لا يطلع إلينا من طرق المدينة.

على أنقاب المدينة ملائكة، لا يدخلها الطاعون، ولا الدجال
At the passes of the city are angels; the plague and the Antichrist will not enter it.
وهن عجال من نباك ومن نقب
And they are swift from your place and from the passage.
ينقب بها البيطار سرة الدابة ليخرج منها ماء أصفر.
The veterinarian pierces the navel of the animal with it to extract yellow fluid.
كالسيد لم ينقب البيطار سرته ولم يسمه ولم يلمس له عصبا
Like a noble one, the veterinarian did not pierce his navel, nor brand him, nor touch his sinew.
كأن مقط شراسيفه إلى طرف القنب، فالمنقب
As if the cutting of his ribs reached the end of the flank, then the navel.
أقب لم ينقب البيطار سرته ولم يدجه ولم يغمز له عصبا
A horse with a tucked-up belly, whose navel the veterinarian did not pierce, nor brand, nor touch its sinew.
جنوح الهالكي على يديه مكبا يجتلي نقب النصال
The falling of the falling one upon his hands, bent over, polishing the rust of the blades.
جلوت السيف والنصل من النقب: آثار الصدإ، شبهت بأوائل الجرب
I polished the sword and the blade from the nuqb: the traces of rust, likened to the beginnings of scabies.
ولا ح أزهر مشهور بنقبته كأنه حين يعلو عاقرا لهب
And a bright, prominent one appeared on his face, as if it were a flame when it rises.

أن مولاة امرأة اختلعت من كل شيء لها، وكل ثوب عليها، حتى نقبتها، فلم ينكر ذالك
That a freedwoman of a woman divorced herself from everything she owned, and every garment on her, until her nuqbah, and he did not deny that.
وإنها لحسنة النقبة، بالكسر، وهي هيئة الانتقاب
And indeed she is beautiful in her nuqbah, with a kasra, which is the manner of veiling.
بأعين منها مليحات النقب
With eyes from them, beautiful in their appearance.
رجل ميمون النقيبة: مبارك النفس، مظفر بما يحاول.
A man of blessed nuqaybah: blessed in spirit, victorious in what he attempts.
إذا كان ميمون الأمر، ينجح فيما حاول، ويظفر.
If he is fortunate in his affairs, he succeeds in what he attempts and is victorious.
إنه ميمون النقيبة
He is blessed in his character.
منجح الفعال، مظفر المطالب.
Successful in deeds, victorious in pursuits.
إذا كان ميمون المشورة ومحمود المختبر.
If he is fortunate in counsel and commendable in testing.

يقال: فلان ميمون العريكة والنقيبة والنقيمة، والطبيعة، بمعنى واحد.
It is said: So-and-so is blessed in his temperament, character, disposition, and nature, meaning one thing.
وهي المؤتزرة بضرعها عظما وحسنا، بينة النقابة.
And she is the one girded by her udder in size and beauty, clearly having a large udder.
كلب نقبت غلصمته، أو حنجرته، ليضعف صوته
A dog whose gullet, or throat, has been cut to weaken its voice.
لئلا يسمع صوته الأضياف، كما في الصحاح.
So that its voice is not heard by guests, as in Al-Sahah.
ولا يرتفع صوت نباحه، وإنما يفعل ذالك البخلاء من العرب، لئلا يطرقهم ضيف، باستماع نباح الكلاب.
And the sound of its bark does not rise; only the stingy Arabs do this, so that a guest does not arrive upon them by hearing the dogs' barking.
وبعثنا منهم اثنى عشر نقيبا
And We raised among them twelve chieftains.
النقيب، في اللغة، كالأمين والكفيل.
The naqib, in language, is like a trustee and a guarantor.
نقبت عليهم نقابة، بالكسر: فعل ذالك أي: من التعريف، والشهود، والضمانة، وغيرها.
He undertook a naqabah over them, with a kasra: he did that, meaning: of introduction, witnessing, guarantee, and others.

وكان من النقباء
And he was among the nuqabaa.
جمع نقيب، وهو كالعريف على القوم، المقدم عليهم، الذي يتعرف أخبارهم، وينقب عن أحوالهم، أي يفتش.
The plural of naqib, who is like the overseer of the people, their leader, who learns their news and investigates their conditions, meaning searches.
كل واحد من الجماعة الذين بايعوه بها نقيبا على قومه وجماعته، ليأخذوه عليهم الإسلام، ويعرفوهم شرائطه، وكانوا اثني عشر نقيبا، كلهم من الأنصار، وكان عبادة بن الصامت منهم.
Each one of the group who pledged allegiance to him was a naqib over his people and his group, to take Islam upon them and inform them of its conditions, and they were twelve nuqabaa, all from the Ansar, and Ubadah ibn al-Samit was among them.
وإنما قيل للنقيب: نقيب؛ لأنه يعلم دخيلة أمر القوم، ويعرف مناقبهم، وهو الطريق إلى معرفة أمورهم.
And the naqib was called naqib because he knows the inner workings of the people's affairs and their merits, and it is the way to know their matters.
نقبت الحائط، أي: بلغت في النقب آخره.
I pierced the wall, meaning: I reached the end of the penetration.
العالم بالأمور.

The niqab, and the manqab, with a kasra and softening: the man who is knowledgeable about things, who searches for them extensively and investigates them.
الرجل العلامة

هو الرجل العالم بالأشياء، المبحث عنها، الفطن الشديد الدخول فيها
He is the man knowledgeable about things, who searches for them, is intelligent, and deeply involved in them.
كريم جواد أخو مأقط نقاب يحدث بالغائب
Generous, noble, brother of a needy one, a knowledgeable one who informs of the absent.
ما تنتقب به المرأة
What a woman veils herself with.
وهو القناع على مارن الأنف
And it is the veil over the bridge of the nose.
إذا أدنت المرأة نقابها إلى عينها فتلك الوصوصة، فإن أنزلته دون ذالك إلى المحجر فهو النقاب، فإن كان على طرف الأنف فهو اللفام.
If a woman lowers her niqab to her eye, that is the wusisah; if she lowers it below that to the eye socket, it is the niqab; if it is on the tip of the nose, it is the lifam.
النقاب محدث
The niqab is an innovation.
أن النساء ما كن ينتقبن، أي: يختمرن.
That women did not used to wear the niqab, meaning: they used to cover their heads.
ليس هذا وجه الحديث، ولاكن النقاب عند العرب هو الذي يبدو منه محجر العين؛ ومعناه: أن إبداءهن المحاجر محدث، إنما كان النقاب لاصقا بالعين، وكانت تبدو إحدى العينين، والأخرى مستورة.
This is not the meaning of the hadith, but rather the niqab among the Arabs is that from which the eye socket appears; and its meaning is that their showing of the eye sockets is an innovation; the niqab used to be attached to the eye, and one eye would appear, and the other would be covered.
والنقاب لا يبدو منه إلا العينان.
And from the niqab, only the two eyes appear.

وتراهن شزبا كالسعالي يتطلعن من ثغور النقاب
And you see them scattered like demons peeking from the openings of the passes.
