And ad-da'bub: the darkness of the nights.
ويقال: ليلة دعبوب، إذا كانت ليلة سوداء شديدة
And it is said: a da'bub night, if it was a dark, severe night.
ويعلم الضيف إما ساقه صرد أو ليلة من محاق الشهر دعبوب
And the guest knows whether he is afflicted by cold or by a dark night of the new moon.
والطريق المذلل المسلوك الواضح لمن سلك
And the easy, traveled, clear path for whoever takes it.
طريقها سرب بالناس دعبوب

قيل: أصله الدعبوب فحذف الواو كما يقصر الممدود
It is said: its origin is ad-da'bub, so the 'waw' was deleted as a long vowel is shortened.
وتدعب عليه: تدلل
And tad'aba 'alayhi: to act coy with him.

And tad'abaw: they jested with each other.
ويقال: إنه ليتداعب على الناس، أي يركبهم بمزاح وخيلاء، ويغمهم ولا يسبهم
And it is said: he indeed plays upon people, meaning he rides them with jesting and arrogance, and vexes them without insulting them.
والأدعب كالدعبب: الأحمق، والاسم منه الدعابة، بالضم وقد تقدم
And al-ad'ab (like ad-da'bab): the fool, and the noun from it is ad-du'abah (with dammah), which has preceded.
وماء داعب: يستن في سيله كذا في النسخ أي جريه
And da'ib water: flows strongly in its course, thus in the manuscripts, meaning its flow.
