The endeavors of a man and the glories of his fathers were only called 'hasab' because when they boasted, the boaster among them would count his merits and the glories of his fathers and measure them.
حسب الرجل نقاء ثوبيه
A man's 'hasab' is the cleanliness of his two garments.
تنكح المرأة لمالها وحسبها وميسمها ودينها، فعليك بذات الدين تربت يداك
A woman is married for her wealth, her lineage, her beauty, and her religion; so take the one who is religious, may your hands be rubbed (in dust - i.e., you will prosper).
الحسب الفعال الحسن له ولآبائه
Al-hasab is the good deed for him and his fathers.
حسب المرء دينه، ومروءته خلقه، وأصله عقله
A person's 'hasab' is his religion, his manliness is his character, and his origin is his intellect.
اختاروا إحدى الطائفتين إما المال وإما السبي، فقالوا: أما إذا خيرتنا بين المال والحسب فإنا نختار الحسب
They were given a choice between two groups: either the wealth or the captives. They said: 'But if you give us a choice between wealth and honor, we choose honor.'
فاختاروا أبناءهم ونساءهم
So they chose their sons and their women.
وفلان لا حسب له ولا نسب
And so-and-so has no 'hasab' and no 'nasab'.
فكان يبين لهم أن الحسب ليس هو ما تعدونه من المفاخر الدنيوية والمناقبه الفاتية الذاهبة، بل الحسب الذي ينبغي للعاقل أن يحسبه ويعده في مفاخراته هو الدين
So he would explain to them that 'hasab' is not what you count of worldly glories and fleeting merits, but rather the 'hasab' that an intelligent person should count and consider among his glories is religion.
وقد حسب الرجل بالضم حسابة بالفتح كخطب خطابة
And a man has become 'hasaba' (with damma) with 'hasaba' (with fatha) like 'khataba' (with damma) with 'khataba' (with fatha).
ورب حسيب الأصل غير حسيب
And many a noble of origin is not noble (in deed).
أي له آباء يفعلون الخير ولا يفعله هو
Meaning he has fathers who do good, but he does not do it.
حسبك درهم
A dirham suffices you.
أي كفاك

أي يقسم بينهم بالسوية ولا يؤثر به أحد
