This is the statement of Ibn al-Athir, and it occurred in the narration of Muslim, and 'Iyadh and others pointed it out, saying: the correct distance is three miles.
وهي أي تلك الزيادة ما بين ناحيتي حوضي أي مقدار ما بين حافتي الحوض مما بين المدينة و بين هذين البلدين المتقاربين جرباء وأذرع
And it, meaning that addition, is the distance between the two sides of the basin, i.e., the extent between the edges of the basin, from what is between Medina and these two nearby towns, Jarba' and Adhru'.
وبينهما ميل واحد أو أقل، لأن الواقف في هذه ينظر هذه
And the distance between them is one mile or less, because one standing in one can see the other.
والجريب من الأرض والطعام مقدار معلوم الذراع والمساحة، وهو عشرة أقفزة، لكل قفيز منها عشرة أعشراء
And al-jarīb of land and food is a known measure of cubits and area, which is ten qafiz, and each qafiz has ten 'ushur.
أقطع الوالي فلانا جريبا من الأرض، أي مبرز جريب، وهو مكيلة معروفة
The governor granted so-and-so a jarib of land, meaning a plot of a jarib, which is a known measure.
ويقال: الجريب مكيال قدر أربعة أقفزة
And it is said: al-jarīb is a measure of four qafiz.

And this village is a great town in Ifriqiya in the Great Sea island, not from the land of the Maghreb to which it is attributed.

And al-jirāb, with kasra, and not with fatha, or the fatha is a variant pronunciation as narrated by Judge 'Iyadh bin Musa Al-Yashubi in Al-Mashariq from Al-Qazzaz and others like Ibn Al-Sikkit, Al-Jawhari, and Ibn Manzur for the general populace: the waterskin or container, is known.
وهو أعم من المزود، وقيل: هو وعاء من إهاب الشاء لا يوعى فيه إلا يابس
And it is more general than a waterskin, and it is said: it is a container made of sheep hide in which only dry things are placed.

Plural: jurub, like kitāb and kutub, according to analogy.
وأجربة قال الفيومي: إنه مسموع فيه، وحكاه الجوهري وغيره
And ajribah, Al-Fayoumi said: it is heard for it, and Al-Jawhari and others narrated it.

And al-jirāb: the sac of the testicles.
والجراب من البئر: اتساعها
And the jirāb of a well: its width.
وفي المحكم، وقيل: جرابها: ما بين جاليها وحواليها من أعلاها إلى أسفلها
And in Al-Muḥkam, it is said: its jirāb: what is between its sides and surroundings from its top to its bottom.
وفي الصحاح: جوفها من أعلاها إلى أسفلها
And in Al-Ṣiḥāḥ: its interior from its top to its bottom.

And it is said: 'Fold its jirāb with the stone.'

And from Abu 'Amr: al-jarrab without 'ha' is the short man who is cunning, wicked, and malicious.
إنك قد زوجتها جربا تحسبه وهو مخنذ ضبا ليس بشافي أم عمر وشطبا
You have married her to a jarrab, whom you think is a snake, but he is a weakling, not a healer.
والجربانة كعفتانة ومثله في اللسان بجلبانة، ويقال: امرأة جربانة، وهي الصخابة البذيئة السيئة الخلق
And al-jarbānah like 'afnānah, and similarly in Al-Lisān with jalbānah. And it is said: a woman is jarbānah, meaning loud-mouthed, vulgar, and ill-mannered.
جربانة ورهاء تخص حمارها بفي من بغى خيرا إليها الجلامد
A jarbānah and a wise one, she singles out her donkey with her mouth, from whoever seeks good towards her, the hard rocks.
وقيل: الجربانة: الضخمة
And it is said: al-jarbānah: the large, stout one.
