قال الجميح بن الطماح الأسدي: يا هيء مالي من يعمر بفنه مر الزمان عليه والتقليب ويروى يا شيء مالي، ويافيء مالي وكله واحد
Al-Jumayh bin Al-Tammah Al-Asadi said: 'O Hayyi Mali, whoever lives his life, time passes over him and changes it.' It is also narrated as 'O Shay' Mali', and 'O Fayyi Mali', and they are all the same.

Or a noun. Ibn Barrī narrated from some linguists that 'Hayyi'' is a noun for an imperative verb, meaning 'be attentive!' and 'wake up!' (like 'sah!' and 'mah!'), in their being nouns (for 'be silent!' and 'stop!'). And the vocative particle entered upon it as it entered upon an imperative verb in the saying of Al-Shammakh: 'O bring me to drink before the raid of Sinjal'.

And it was (built with a vowel for the two quiescent letters) meaning, so that two quiescent letters do not meet.
